Engineers and surveyors are almost universally known as poor communicators, and because of our mostly technical education, we should be.
The consequences of a poor presentation can be disastrous to the presenter, the client, and the firm. I recently attended a presentation to a client where a young engineer’s presentation contained too much technical detail and went far beyond the time allocated. He completely missed the signals of board members who were leaving the room for coffee, falling asleep, and shuffling their papers and closing their notebooks. Fortunately, the only consequence was a few members being late for their next meeting.
