This was in itself a tremendous task as the font, with its accents and ligatures, consisted of more than six hundred characters. After this successful attempt, Aldus produced a great number of splendid books, among them the most famous specimen of printing in all Fifteenth-Century Italy, The Dream of Poliphilius. The text of this allegory was decorated with drawings of exquisite workmanship, and the relation between type and drawing has rarely been equaled in the subsequent history of illustration.

It is true that the pathetic tales expressively told in “The Harlot’s Progress” and “The Rake’s Progress” will hardly produce the same effect today as their creator so solemnly expected. But in the early Eighteenth Century they were immensely popular. Hogarth’s public very probably cared little about artistic merit, but in Moll Hackabout, the harlot, it found a subject close to its understanding. Moll’s success was followed by the “Rake’s Progress”, and then came the most finished, technically, of the plates, “Marriage a la Mode”, in which Hogarth bitterly satirized upper-class society in six trenchant scenes.

The way is easier now than it has ever been. During the preparation of this volume the world has passed from a troubled and uneasy peace to a conflagration the like of which no history records. Its effect upon the peaceful arts of nations is impossible to foretell. Some of the men and women whose work appears in the later pages of this book are now engaged in the bitter struggle to preserve for themselves and those who come after some semblance of the freedom and dignity of a life they held to be dear.
